Learn about responsible gambling
Is it possible to keep gambling and betting under control? At the Naberte kurz Center, we believe it is. At the same time, we have to admit that it’s not always easy. In fact, controlled gambling can require a great deal of self-control and discipline.
The world of gambling and betting hides pitfalls that may not be completely obvious at first glance. What starts as a game and relaxation can creepingly turn into a social, financial, or health problem. An addiction can develop. No player or bettor starts playing with the motivation to go bankrupt or become addicted, yet it happens to many.
How can you prevent these risks? How do you avoid getting swept away by the game and keep your gambling or betting under control? The following recommendations can serve as steps toward increasing your own responsibility as a player or bettor:
- Set financial limits for a single game/bet per day and stick to them.
- Manage the feeling of losing—once you reach your daily limit, stop and do not continue playing.
- Establish an overall financial ceiling based on a review of your finances and a clear understanding of your disposable income.
- Keep track of both money and time that you want to spend—and actually do spend—gambling or betting.
- Treat gambling and betting strictly as entertainment, not as a necessary source of income.
- Make sure to get enough rest, relax, and pursue other interests as well.
- Be open about it if you gamble or bet.
- Avoid alcohol and other addictive substances, as they impair your focus, lower your alertness, and break down your resolve.
- Accept your losses. If you lose, it happened. Do not chase your losses to try and win your money back.
- Don't be afraid to ask for help.
